First off, please thank the rigger that performed the Raminator install in Strathmore, Alberta. It was not an easy job nor were the conditions great but he pulled it off successfully which is fantastic. We truly appreciate his efforts on this install.

I want to let you know (and I'm sure you already do) that your riggers are First in Class. I was more than impressed with their preparation in making the pilot a training opportunity, knowledge, professionalism and attention to detail. The delay was handled graciously and every effort was made to ensure a minimal amount of inconvenience to the client and their customers. Well done!

thanks,
Cathy

What size containers are available via intermodal?

Rail containers come in a variety of sizes, they are 20', 40', 45' 48' & 53'. A breakdown of dimensions can be found here. For the most part all 48' and 53' containers are considered "domestic boxes". They are not used to ship overseas. Most 20',40' and 45' boxes are international boxes and are made especially for ocean transit. IMC's are called on by the steamship lines to reposition their containers back to the western U.S. ports. (L.A., Oakland, Portland, and Seattle). There are great incentives passed on to get these boxes repositioned and these savings make using these smaller boxes attractive to many shippers. Unfortunately, they are usually only moving from East to West.

How is intermodal transit time?

Intermodal transit time has come a long way since back in the days of stopping at every ramp along the way. The rails have made great strides in streamlining their operations, and there are even expedited services offered which are comparable to OTR transit times. Many LTL common carriers use rail as well as UPS and the post office to get their shipments delivered on time.

What are the advantages of Intermodal?

The number one reason people cite for using rail is price. Using intermodal can often save you and your company money off of your shipping costs, depending on the lanes you are shipping. The rail is usually most competitive when moves are 1000 miles or more, and going form one metropolitan area to another. Intermodal also offers flexibility. Once your container is "grounded and notified" you have two to three days to take delivery. In addition, intermodal containers can often be dropped for little or no extra cost.

What are the advantages of using a truck broker?

Truck broker allow you to make one phone call and cover your load at a competitive price. Calling multiple truckers to find out who has availability and at what price, can be time consuming and costly. A good truck broker can save you time as well as money. It is like having a team of dispatchers working for you. Often, a truck broker can save you money too, particularly a large and experienced one.

Are there weight restrictions when I ship via intermodal?

Although there are no weight restrictions once your box is on the train, your shipment still must travel via truck at the origin and destination pick up and delivery points. Therefore, it must be under 80,000 lbs gross and must also scale legally.

How can I find out where my shipment is once it is on the rail?

We track and trace each and every shipment a couple times per day. These updates can be found by logging into our web site or by arranging reports to be sent via, fax, email mail, or EDI. For the do-it-yourselfer all rails have web sites and phone numbers which we can provide.

Can I ship Haz Mat on the rail?

Yes, with proper documentation, Haz Mat can be shipped via rail. The rails all have a minimal surcharge for this service.

Can I ship Flatbeds via Intermodal?

No, for obvious safety reasons, the rails can not allow flatbeds to travel via intermodal. The risk of an unseen loadshift would be too great. However, many flatbed shippers are still able to take advantage of rails price by transloading from flatbed to intermodal container or vice versa. With the ever-escalating prices of flatbeds as well as their scarcity, many people find this service viable.
